Abstract: Cross-border e-commerce, a major platform for information gathering, communication and collaboration, becomes an important means for enterprises to participate in the global division of production. This paper employs three sets of highly detailed micro enterprise data, including the Member Enterprise Data of Alibaba International Station, Chinese Industrial Enterprises Database and China Customs Database, adopts the method of propensity score matching and difference in difference to analyze the impact of cross-border e-commerce on enterprise participation in global value chains. The results show that: generally, cross-border e-commerce promotes enterprises’ value chain participation by reducing searching and matching costs as well as market entry costs; in terms of enterprise heterogeneity, cross-border e-commerce reduces the “threshold” for enterprises to participate in the global division of production. E-commerce tends to promote the participation of small enterprises in the value chain more prominently, compared with that of the large enterprises. Cross-border e-commerce tremendously expands the “productivity boundary” for enterprises to participate in the global division of production, and compared with enterprises with high productivity, cross-border e-commerce boosts more significantly the participation of enterprises with low productivity in the global value.
