Abstract: The survival of Chinese enterprises has unique characteristics under the conditions of economic transition. Based on the data samples of 54,159 newly established state-owned and private industrial enterprises in Hunan Province from 1998 to 2007, the results show that: efficiency has had a significant positive impact on the survival of enterprises even at the industry level. The impact on private industrial enterprises is larger than that on state-owned enterprises. With the deepening of economic transition, the role of efficiency is more and more important in improving the survival of Chinese enterprises. However, the survival of Chinese state-owned enterprises have not been affected by the economic transition at present.
