Abstract: The model of the international division of labor has changed fundamentally, and the division of labor in the global value chain is becoming a new feature of the current world economy. This paper firstly identifies and measures the domestic and international production segmentation of major economies in the world based on the production stage segmentation method, and then investigates the impact of production segmentation on export sophistication. It is found that both domestic production segmentation and international production segmentation can significantly improve a country or region’ s export sophistication. The results are tested by a series of endogenous and expansion analyses,and the conclusion is still robust. In addition, in the regulatory effect test, this paper also finds that intellectual property protection plays an important role in regulating the production of high-skilled products. It not only directly promotes the upgrading of a country or region’s export sophistication, but also strengthens the effect of global production segmentation on export sophistication. This paper provides theoretical support for China’s industry to rise to the middle and high level of the global value chain.
