Abstract: The applicability of Engel coefficient in China is an important academic topic. This study analyzes the invalidation of Engel coefficient and its reasons using the survey data of Harbin and Shenyang’s poverty population. Researchers try to define a new numerator and revise the denominator of Engel coefficient. The tests show that the revised Engel coefficient describes the real level of poor urban families more exactly both in the macroscopical and microcosmic measurements.
