Abstract: Society is highly structured in terms of household organization, and income inequalities within couples in household is an important indicator to understand the gender earning gap, but few studies delve into these. Using CHNS 2000 and 2009 database, based on Mincer income function and the Oaxaca decomposition technique, through the dynamic comparative analysis, this paper finds that income disparity within couples is much greater than that between males and females. Then it reveals that the mechanism of income disparity within couples, with double effects of “matched marriage” and “marriage gradient”, differs from the income disparity between males and females, and some meaningful conclusions are derived.
