Abstract: Based on the input-output table of OECD countries (regions) from 1995 to 2011, this paper calculates and analyzes the industrial upstream degree, domestic value added rate and its changing characteristics of domestic sales, processing export and general export sectors of China’s manufacturing industry after distinguishing trade modes, and investigates whether there is an industrial “smile curve” between the value chain division position and domestic value added income in China’s manufacturing industry. The results show that:1) the “upstream” trend of China’s manufacturing industry is obvious, and the growth rate of upstream degree is in order of domestic sales, general export and processing export;2) the domestic value added rate of domestic sales and general export sectors shows a downward trend, while the domestic value added rate of processing export sectors rises significantly;3) the value chain curve of China’s manufacturing industry is not static, and the industrial “smile curve” has no general significance, and the heterogeneity of trade mode, time evolution and factor concentration plays an important role in regulating the value chain curve of manufacturing industry. Therefore, the key to the high-quality development of China’s manufacturing industry lies in the continuous and multi-point embedding of industrial transformation and upgrading through technological innovation.
