Abstract: In the first half of the twentieth Century, A General Treatise On Statistics is a widely distributed social statistics textbook in China and Japan, which have 42 Japanese editions to 1921 June and have 10 Chinese editions published by The Commercial Press to 1931 May. The content of this book is based on the author Yokoyama Masao?s another earlier book Statistics Lecture which was translated to Notes On Statistics Lecture by Niu Yongjian and Lin Zhuonan in China and was published by Shi Zhong Press in 1903. In 1908, A General Treatise On Statistics translated by Meng Sen was firstly published in China, which was translated from the 4th Japanese edition(1904). This book covers the basic content of social statistics, it not only helped to popularize western statistics in Japan, but also promoted the change from ancient statistics to modern statistics in China. A General Treatise On Statistics played an important role in statistics education during the period of Late Qing Dynasty and Early Republic of China.
