Abstract: The three basic conditions of estimating Gini Index are authentic residents’ income, correct data handling, and appropriate estimating method. The details in data collecting which should be paid attention are firstly discussed in this paper, including the definition of the concept of income, the determination of income counting entity and period, etc. Then the limitations of calculating residents' income and estimating Gini Index based on household sample surveys in China are analyzed. Finally, some methods for estimating Gini Index and the enlightenments are introduced.
