Abstract: Explore the Logic of Economic Measurement: Difficulties and Principles is the first volume of Critical Series of Contemporary Economic Statistics by Professor Qiu Dong. It mainly reviews the problems existing in SSF Economic Measurement Report, reflecting the author?s deep thinking on contemporary economic statistics. This paper begins with the debate on the “basic function” of GDP, points out the dynamic restriction of measuring “feasibility” to its “necessity”, and discusses the potential challenge of GDP function and accounting system. Taking the measurement of government output as an example, this paper distinguishes the “theoretical concept” and the corresponding “measurement concept” in economic science, and points out that economic indicators always imply economic standpoint. Based on the four measurement dilemmas of GDP statistics proposed by Professor Qiu Dong, the measurement principles of macroeconomic indicators and their relations are sorted out. Then it reflects on the feasibility and necessity of life quality measurement and the conceptual premise of sustainable development measurement, points out the existing doubts about additivity, and systematically analyzes the measurement mechanism of different types of currently popular methods. Finally, this paper expounds Professor Qiu Dong?s views on the discipline pattern of economic statistics, pointing out that the grand goal of “beyond GDP” has not been realized, and the discipline of economic statistics still needs to be deepened, improved and expanded, and there is much potential in economic statistics.
