Abstract: At present, the digital economy is booming and has become a new driving force for economic growth. This paper constructs an indicator system of digital economy development from the dimensions of digital industrialization and industrial digitalization using principal component analysis and empirically analyzes the impact of digital economy development on total factor productivity using China’ s provincial panel data from 2004 to 2017 on the basis of overcoming endogenous problems. The results show that digital economy development has a significant positive effect on total factor productivity. Compared with high-productivity regions and eastern regions, digital economy development has a greater effect on the improvement of total factor productivity in low-productivity regions and central and western regions of China. In terms of the mechanism, human capital investment and industrial structure upgrading are two channels through which the digital economy affects total factor productivity. Furthermore, spatial econometric analyses find that the digital economy development not only increases local total factor productivity but also has a significant spatial spillover effect, which helps to improve the total factor productivity of neighboring regions. The research in this paper provides the data support and analysis perspective for evaluating the impact of digital economy development and also provides the policy reference for exploring the way to improve total factor productivity.
