Abstract: While the imported intermediate inputs remain a high level, the foreign value added in China’s export shows a sluggish growth. Structure adjustment of China’s trade is only one of the reasons, but the deep-seated factors have to be analyzed in the dynamic evolution of foreign value added in China’s export. Based on the source of material in export and the added-value accounting balance among countries, this paper builds a production model, measures the foreign value added in exports and decomposes them into five parts: value-added capacity of importing country, technical level of importing country, diffusion of international trade, technological level of China, and change of export level. We find the change of export along the binary margin is the most important influencing factor, especially the sluggish growth of intensive margin since the time of reconstruction of value chain. A further analysis of the changes in export margin at the micro level finds that Chinese manufacturing enterprises with different technology level have deep dependence on the international trade environment, economy of scale and policy support, while the high-tech enterprises of China depend also on product quality, productivity and other intrinsic development factors to survive in overseas markets.
