Abstract: The Internet can help reallocate resources, while few current studies analyze how the Internet impacts resources reallocation and the economic performance. This paper explores the micro economic impact of the Internet on exporters’ innovation via the resource reallocation within enterprises mechanism. First, this research introduces the Internet and trade mode to extend an existing multi-product heterogeneous enterprise model. Based on this, the research makes the theoretical hypothesis about Internet’s impact on innovation of exporters. Second, empirical research with China’s micro data is conducted to test the theoretical hypothesis. Results generally verify the hypothesis: Internet can stimulate intrafirm resource reallocation which in turn improves innovation of exporters; while for processing exporters, the Internet impact is much less efficient. The above positive effect is robust across different empirical methods and indexes and more significant for exporters that are in ordinary trade regime, foreign ownership, technologyintensive industries, eastern areas and export to high-income countries. This research provides quantitative and micro evidence for the Internet’s function of intrafirm resource reallocation and new insights for exporters to improve innovation capacity.
