Abstract:

Hsu Pao-Lu and Tai Shih-Kuang are two leaders in the field of modern mathematical statistics and social and economic statistics. They studied in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1930s, and earned doctorate and Master degrees in statistics. After the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War , they returned to Kunming in 1940 and 1938 to teach in the National Southwest Associated University. They not only established a rigorous curriculum in their teaching of mathematical statistics and socio-economic statistics in the department of mathematics and economics, but also achieved significant research breakthroughs that were recognized internationally. All of these were achieved in extremely difficult circumstances. This article documents a series of their anecdotes during this period of time, which reflect their virtues that are particularly admirable during that special time.
